Better insight greater impact

YEEL is, together with our supporting partner PDRC, carrying out a research on the causes and consequences of youth unemployment in the displacement affected communities (DACs) , with an emphasis on understanding and identifying local stakeholders and solutions. The study assess needs, opportunities, gaps etc. that can qualify the YEEL’swork. Specifically, the aim of the research is to learn from earlier or ongoing interventions in the DACs, identify and engage new stakeholders and secure wider support for our intervention.

The research involve desk review of earlier interventions, Focus group interviews, key informant interviews, field research. The final result will help us establish a proper baseline that will guide our multi-annual goals and performance indicators. 

Specific elements to be covered in this study include: 

  • Map all relevant stakeholders, in particular international development organisations, NGOs, CSOs and other grassroot movements operating in the DACs in the targeted areas. 
  • Identify and analyse job creation, business development and entrepreneurship related interventions conducted in the selected DACs in the last three years. 
  • Identify and analyse TVET related interventions conducted in the selected DACs in the last three years.  
  • Identify and provide a brief overview of youth who have participated in earlier interventions 
  • Identify the training needs of the youth in the selected DACs.  
  • Analyse to what extent education opportunities are available to the youth of the selected IDP camps? 
  • Identify viable small business opportunities, and provide a brief overview of innovate and successful small business ideas implemented across the region.    
  • Provide an overview of current labour market trends  
  • Review existing relevant literature regarding job creation, business development and entrepreneurship related interventions, and provide a brief overview of the state of employment in Hargeisa but in particular the DACs, highlighting specific challenges, best practices etc.  
  • Provide recommendations on how to ensure employment opportunities for the youth living in the DACs.
