Supporting displaced youth

The Somali peninsula has a high number of Internally Displaced Populations (IDPs). The majority of the IDPs live in the major cities such as Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Garowe and Burao. Displacement affected communities in the Somali regions, in general, live in dire conditions. The most vulnerable groups (women, children and youth) face risks to their lives, safety, security and dignity, including greater risk of abuses of human rights. In many settlements, sexual and gender-based violence is widespread.

In Somaliland, there is an explicit lack of livelihood opportunities, particularly for young people under the age of 30, who account for an incredible 70% of the population. The country’s youth unemployment rate is among the highest in the world, and their disenchantment and frustration is growing.

YEEL aims to give the marginalised youth, especially women, access to better livelihood through job connection or income generating small businesses.
